How To Have a Fun (& Safe!) Transition Into Your New Home

Moving into a new home is equal parts fun and frustrating. Sure, you’re finally finished dealing with your realtor, your bank, and the rest of the small army involved in buying a new home. But what comes next - the packing, the moving, and the settling in - can be just as much of a timesink.

If you have children, there’s a good chance they’re feeling a lot of mixed emotions. Leaving behind their familiar surroundings, especially if they’re leaving their first and only home, for a new and strange home may excite them at first, but also cause them undue anxiety. Who could blame them? It’s just as agonizing for us!

Transitioning your child into a new home begins long before you’ve got the moving truck loaded. Having a safe, socially-distanced housewarming party can help introduce familiar faces into an unfamiliar setting, which can help your child feel more at home.

Have A Zoom House Tour

Even though your child may be feeling uneasy about moving into your new home, they’ll probably also want to show it off. One way to do so safely is to hold a virtual house tour for their school friends, or your family members!
Invite all of your guests into a Zoom meeting on your phone and have your child lead the tour. They can show off their new room, backyard, garden, or any other area they think is tour-worthy. Not only will your family get a good glimpse of your new digs, but your child will feel confident and proud that they’ve been trusted enough to lead a real house tour! You can even send them some trivia questions ahead of time to make the tour even more interactive.

Drive-Thru House Party

In our socially-distanced world, sometimes the safest way to visit our loved ones is just by driving by and letting them know we’re thinking of them. Bonus points if we get to wave at them or share a coffee together side-by-side!

Cars also provide a pandemic-friendly way to invite your friends and family to check out your new home without risking safety.

Send out invites to all of your friends and family with your brand new address and the date and time of your drive-thru house party. Set up a grill in your front yard for some hot dogs or hamburgers they can grab-and-go. And print out a yard sign to let your whole neighborhood know that you’ve officially arrived!

Unfamiliar Home, Familiar Faces

Moving is tough on kids, especially now that there’s so much distance between what is familiar and comfortable to them. While some schools are still operating only virtually, they’re missing their friends and family more than ever.

A new home is a great new beginning and they’re sure to settle in sooner or later. By holding a safe, socially-distanced housewarming celebration, you can spin their possible anxiety into excitement and anticipation.
